当石墨片卷起来形成奈米管的圆筒部分,手性矢量的端部彼此相重,手性矢量形成了奈米管圆形横截面的圆周,不同的m和n值导致不同奈米管结构。
碳奈米管的性能由它们的直径和手性角来确定,而这两个参数又取决于n和m值,直径为石墨片上近邻碳原子的间距,当n=m,时形成单臂奈碳管(armchairnanotube)
n=0或m=0,则为锯齿形奈碳管(zigzagnanotube)
n=0或m=0,时则为手性奈碳管(chiralnanotube)
奈米碳管可为金属性或半导体的,有1/3小直径的CNT是金属的,而其余为半导体。一般当(n-m)=3i(i为整数值)时,这种(n,m)奈米碳管为金属性的,所有的单臂CNT是金属性的,手性和锯齿奈米管中,部份为金属性,部份为半导体性。
